Fraggle Rock: Complete Series Collection DVD 37.49

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Amazon’s Deal of the Day is the 20 disc complete series of Fraggle Rock, an–damn I shouldn’t buy anything else this month–but I bit.

I loved the show as a kid, although I only saw each episode about once back in the 80′s so I don’t remember too much about it. I think I liked Boober because he reminded me of me at the time (something to do with wearing hats all the time).

Those worker Doozers, I always wondered what their crystal buildings tasted like.

A long time ago I was tripping in the Connecticut woods just after Hurricane Bob. I looked over at the twisted roots of a massive, newly fallen tree and they slowly deconstructed bit by bit into Marjory the Trash Heap from Fraggle Rock.

Based on that, I guess you could say this purchase was destiny for me.

Xbox 360 Slim Warranty is Now 1 Year

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Interesting, the new Xbox 360 slim has a one year warranty instead of the usual three years on the older models, Microsoft must be confident that this version of the console will not red ring of death nearly as much… Actually the 360 slim can’t red ring, but now it supposedly has a red dot in the center of the green leds signaling if the console overheats. This, along with a warning on the screen to turn the power off. This warning doesn’t “brick” the console, you can just turn it back on in a few, but I would still take every precaution with the new models.

I’ve owned a launch 360 for four years, a Falcon Elite model and a Jasper Arcade and none of them red ringed, most of that is probably luck, but I did take a few precautions. First, I always place the power brick on top of something so air gets under it, like a plastic mesh dishwasher/silverware type holder thing. I also never placed the console in a closed or even half closed entertainment center, I usually just left it in the open on top of one, but I made a flexy table last year out of steel rods and oak and I’ve found that to be the absolute bee’s tits of home theater racks. Easy to dust, everything is well ventilated and such. Barring a flexy table or just leaving the console out in the open, I would just try and make sure there’s at least a few inches of space on every side of it.

Bioshock 2 Elite Bouncer Preorder at Toys R Us

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The Bioshock Elite Bouncers from the Bioshock 2 figure line (they are a Toys R’ Us exclusive) are now up for preorder.

I snagged a couple, maybe they’ll be worth five bucks in a year or two. The original Big Daddy figures they made were pretty cool, perfect for a fishtank or something.

Red Dead Redemption Candle & Schwag

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I’m a sucker for gaming schwag, especially when its branded with a game that I happen to like such as GTA or the more recent Red Dead Redemption. A “rare” bar of soap and some dice branded with Red Dead Redemption regularly sold for over a hundred dollars on eBay–also consider the recent Bioshock 2 Splicer Masks selling for hundreds on auction. Yikes, and I thought I was bad paying 40 bucks for the GTAIV Statue of Happiness figure when it first released. I saw the prices for the Red Dead promo items on eBay and said screw that!

That is, until I found out they’re now available from the Rockstar Warehouse online store and they’re at reasonable prices–reasonable considering they previously cost an arm and a leg on eBay.

I’ve come to believe there’s quite a market for gaming collectibles, especially when a game is recent and hot. I’m glad to see 2kgames selling cool stuff for Bioshock 2 and now Red Dead Redemption. Fans pay a reasonable price for the useless (but cool) items they don’t really need and the publisher or developer gets a cut instead of some Gamestop employee who ransacks their division’s allocation of free loot and sells it on the bay. Lots of untapped potential out there for schwag, I still can’t believe there aren’t any acrylic life-size Zelda rupees being sold as of yet.

Anyways, here’s the Red Dead goods. First the candle, it comes in a Red Dead branded box and I was surprised by the weight of it. It’s pretty solid and has a wick in the very center piece of “dynamite.”

The soap under the candle box above is weird, I would have passed on the soap but I got it because it was cheaper to buy a set of items. I mean, black glycerin soap? Soap isn’t really prevalent in the game either… I would rather a shotgun shell USB drive or a glowing manure cake or something… The playing dice below come in this cool little leather pouch thing branded with Rockstar and Red Dead, they’re just cheap little dice but I like them.

The skull playing cards are very cool, these were given out for free at some Walmarts and Gamestops but the “Deluxe” ones on the warehouse site have a nicer clothbound case:

I’m thinking of building a rustic old looking wooden chest and buying three more of the dynamite candles to put in it. On second thought, maybe not.
